Sterling Homes is committed to the
Green Building Ethic,
as guided by the Environments For Living® program; enhancing the “
greenness”
of existing homes in such a way that they become more energy efficient, comfortable and healthier living environments for you and generations to come.
In our Green program for existing homes, we have identified key upgrades that can help reduce the amount of electricity you use. This program can save you money, while helping reduce growing demands upon our regional energy resources.
To help you save energy and conserve natural resources Sterling Homes with the help of the Environments For Living program have carefully crafted three green packages to fit your individual needs and budget.
This program is a winner for existing homeowners and a winner for generations to come.
Insulation Upgrade
In the last 10 years the U.S. Department of Energy’s recommendation for insulation has changed. Homes not insulated to this recommendation may suffer heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. By adding additional insulation you can save up to 20% on your heating and cooling bills and make your home more comfortable year round.
Duct sealing
Leaky ducts can reduce heating and cooling system efficiency by as much as 20 percent. Sealing ducts can help reduce your energy usage and make your rooms more comfortable year round. In addition, fumes from household and garden chemicals, insulation particles, and dust can enter your duct system, aggravating asthma and allergy problems. Sealing ducts can help improve indoor air quality by reducing the risk of pollutants entering ducts and circulating through your home.
Lighting
Making improvements to your lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. In general compact fluorescent lighting uses up to 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Diagnostic Analysis
Air leakage can increase heating and cooling energy usage over 30% and can contribute to comfort, health and safety issues. Diagnostic equipment is used to measure and identify leaks in the building envelope and duct system.
Kneewall Backing
Kneewall backing secures insulation and creates a tighter building space, reduces overall house leakage and enhances insulation performance.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Installing Carbon Monoxide detectors help protect you from potential exposure to combustion pollutants.
Programmable Thermostat
Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. As a result, the equipment doesn’t operate as much when you are asleep or when the house or part of the house is not occupied.
Radiant Barrier
Adding radiant barrier helps reduce your home’s energy usage while improving comfort. It helps boost the performance of your standard insulation and lower temperatures throughout your home. Radiant barrier is a straight forward way to reduce solar heat gain in the attic during the summer and heat loss through the attic in the winter which reduces the air conditioning loads on hot days and heating loads in the winter.
Weather Stripping
Drafts in your home can make you feel uncomfortable and cause high energy bills!
Replace old weather stripping to seal leaks around movable joints, such as windows or doors. Any air sealing efforts will complement the addition of insulation and vice versa.
Fresh Air Ventilation
Fresh air ventilation exchanges air between the inside and outside of the home. Fresh air ventilation can improve indoor air quality by reducing indoor contaminants.
HVAC Upgrade
Over time your heating and cooling system can lose its ability to properly heat and cool your home. If your heating and cooling system is more than 10 years old it could be time to replace or upgrade your existing heating and air conditioning system.
